What is the biological species concept?

The biological species concept defi nes a species as a group of organisms whose members can potentially interbreed with one another other but are reproductively isolated from members of other species. One problem with this concept is that it does not apply to asexually reproducing organisms. Another is that, in practice, most species are defi ned by phenotypic or anatomical differences, and determining their potential for interbreeding may be diffi cult or impossible.
