First, a geographic barrier splits a population into, say, two groups and prevents gene fl ow between the groups on either side of the barrier. The two groups then evolve independently. Through natural selection, genetic drift, and mutation the two groups become genetically different. These genetic differences lead to reproductive isolation, and the two groups will have undergone allopatric speciation.
